As many of you have heard by now, Amazon has announced it will build a new headquarters in Long Island City, aided by giveaways from the State and City estimated to be up to $3 billion. Meanwhile our city's subway system, schools, and other public services are already overburdened to the point of collapse. With Amazon's expansion in NYC, we can only expect things to get worse. It's sickening that profitable companies are able to extract billions from our government, and it’s particularly galling in the case of Amazon—a company with a well documented anti-democracy and anti-worker record—helmed by Jeff Bezos, the wealthiest person on the planet.
For this meeting we’ll hear from a variety of speakers inside and outside DSA on reasons why Amazon must be resisted, including their ongoing collaboration with ICE and the military, their union-busting and other terrible labor practices, the expected impact their presence will have on New York's already dangerous housing crisis, and their hostility to any kind of public authority. We'll learn what other groups in the DSA and in the broader community are doing to mobilize against this deal—including specific canvasing, petitioning, flyering, phone-banking, rallying, and opposition research efforts—and plug our members into those actions. We'll then then break into discussion groups to strategize what other ways Tech Action can uniquely contribute to this fight against Amazon.
We know December’s a busy time, but this is shaping up to be big, city-wide fight. As DSA-ers both within and particularly interested in the tech industry it is incumbent on us to add our knowledge and skills to this battle. See you on the 4th!
