JOIN US FOR A JUNETEENTH STATEWIDE PROTEST TO #FREEnewyork. On June 19th, at jails and courthouses across the state, we will lift up the voices of directly impacted people and call out urgent injustice: Mass pretrial incarceration. Guilty until proven innocent. A price on our freedom. With Juneteenth actions in Buffalo, Rochester, Albany, NYC, the Hudson Valley, and Long Island, we will shift the landscape in New York State and win real change. The time is now.

In NYC, join us at Foley Square (b/w Centre and Lafayette St. in Manhattan) at 5:30 PM. With the power of collective voice, we will:

Demand accountability from Governor Cuomo and NYS’s elected leaders. Demand emancipation from a racist and discriminatory pretrial system. Demand complete overhaul of bail, discovery and speedy trial laws.

WHY JUNETEENTH?

June 19th, also known as Juneteenth or Freedom Day, commemorates the abolition of slavery. But as directly impacted communities know, we are not yet free.

On any given day, 25,000+ New Yorkers are held in county jails across the state. Nearly 70% are legally innocent – they have not been convicted, but remain caged because of our unjust bail, speedy trial and discovery laws. These systems disproportionately impact Black and brown communities, coerce guilty pleas and violate Constitutional rights to due process and a fair trial with devastating, intergenerational impacts on people and their families.

LIBERATION NOT INCARCERATION

Inspired by the continued legacy of Black liberation and Black resistance, we demand an end to wealth and race based incarceration and we fight to ensure that this unjust system is not replaced by racially biased and harmful risk assessment instruments, electronic monitoring, or any new iteration of the carceral system.

Decarcerate jails.
End money bail.
Protect the due process rights of all people.

Collectively, we will not accept anything short of real justice and freedom for Black & brown people, immigrants, queer and trans communities, poor and working class New Yorkers and all people targeted by mass criminalization and incarceration. No one should be jailed because they cannot afford bail. No one should be denied due process or critical evidence about their case. No one should wait months or years for trial.
