New Sanctuary Coalition (http://www.newsanctuarynyc.org/accompaniment-program-2/) is an interfaith group of congregations, organizations, and individuals working since 2007 to improve detention and deportation practices. NSC relies on trained volunteers to accompany individuals ("friends") facing deportation to their immigration hearings and ICE check-ins in New York City. The volunteer’s role is to support the friend in the process, bear witness, and take notes to pass back to the team representing the friend. Spanish not necessary; most friends understand enough English to communicate about where and when to meet. Court proceedings are in English. All immigration hearings are in NYC; between travel time and wait time, a hearing is estimated to take 4–5 hours.
